Karen Black Widow
In one of their great exchanges, Lady Astor is reported to have said, "Mr. Churchill, if you were my husband, I would put poison in your coffee," to which Winston Churchill replied, "Madame, if you were my wife, I would drink it." Even though our screen captures nearby don't do her justice, Karen Black — well, if Karen Black were our wife or lover, we'd drink it too. That's how sexy she was in the early 1970s made-for-television vignette, Trilogy of Terror. Synopsis: Julie is a shy, schoolmarmish college professor who falls prey to Chad, a handsome, self-assured student who drugs her, takes incriminating photos, and forces her into a lurid sexual affair. (Julie is played by Karen Black, and Chad is played, interestingly enough, by her real-life husband at the time, Robert "Skip" Burton.) Choking and stumbling, he clumsily ejaculates, "you've drugged me." Smoothly, Julie responds, "Oh — No, dear... I've killed you." Why it's so hot: In the execution scene itself, Ms. Black is hot, but has deliberately returns to her schoolmarm manner of dress, wearing her glasses in the manner of a husband who has no more need to be attractive for his spouse. But Ms. Black more than sexes up Chad's death with her ennui... As the scene unfolds, she begins to disobey Chad's commands — confusing him at first, then defying him. He wants the music on — she turns it off. And so on. Finally: "It's over," she says with a Garbot-Dietrichesque sigh. "You see, I'm bored, and when I'm bored, the game is over." "Bored?," Chad wonders. "That's right," Julie italicizes. "Not shocked, not terrified... just plain bored." As Chad begins to stutter and choke, she coldly explains: "First you'll experience dizziness... then, mild paralysis... and then... total cardiac arrest." Ms. Black's sexy photos come during the seduction scenes, as when, for example, she deftly crosses her legs in class, popping out through a slit skirt and ensnaring Chad. (For a lovely shot of Ms. Black in this vein, see her iconic 1975 Hanes advertisement nearby — a virtual shrine on the wall of many young men in the 1970s.) Some critics have called the scene too abrupt — complaining the reversal of roles is too fast to work smoothly. To our eye, this is a fair observation — but also, one of its virtues. Chad's arrogance, and his life, come crashing down like his body itself in a few seconds of realization. He now re-evaluates (as does the audience) the whole previous drama with the knowledge of just how false and shallow his air of control truly was. In the process, Julie (Ms. Black) emerges as the incredibly powerful death-goddess... all the more ineluctable and potent given her appearance of sterility and powerlessness before. The devil wears Prada? Of course... and pantyhose to boot. The devil is a woman. ..
